Chiropractic treatment for the very young is very different to that given to adults, often using no more force than you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato!
We regularly see babies and children in our Beckenham and Sevenoaks Clinics. Some new parents are initially anxious that it may be uncomfortable for their child and are frequently relieved when they realise this is not the case.
For many babies, their first visit to us may be for a specific problem – colic, difficulty sleeping or feeding, or general restlessness are all problems we often see. However, many parents decide to bring their newborns in for a check up soon after birth. Whilst being born is a natural process, modern delivery methods are not always so. Difficult births that involve intervention such as Cesarian sections, ventouse extraction or forceps can place huge strain on babies delicate spine. Even a drugless natural birth can cause pressure and strain on the baby, especially if the labour is prolonged or very rapid with strong contractions, Whilst this is natural it is not normal. Every labour is different and a traumatic birth can have far reaching consequences for the babies spine and their well-being.
It just makes sense to check that nothing has been overlooked. Many require no treatment at all but if there are any areas of imbalance this can usually be corrected very quickly in just one or two visits, even whist the baby is asleep. Parents often report a more settled baby after their visits.
Regular monitoring of your child is just as important in their early years as it is when they get older. Checking their progress in reaching milestones such as head raising, crawling and learning to walk are all important for proper spinal development. Whilst children are more flexible than adults and recover more quickly from the majority of bumps, falls and sprains, they don’t always heal correctly, even though there is no pain.
In fact, parents often report improvement in other aspects of their childs life following chiropractic care, such as better concentration and less fidgeting at school. Parents often bring their children in for occasional check-ups throughout their development, just as you would visit the dentist.
Before any Chiropractic care is given to your child we take the time to explain it all to you and ensure they are comfortable and relaxed. Most children really enjoy their treatments whilst some of the younger ones continue to play with the toys throughout and are hardly aware they are having any treatment at all.
Apart from accidents and sporting injuries, one of the more common problems we see in this age group is a result of poor posture. As a society we are far less physically active these days and teenagers (and adults) spend many hours hunched over desks, using laptops and iPads or slumped in front of the TV.
Exercise and movement are essential to good health, and this includes proper movement of the spine. Unfortunately many children are developing postural problems an an earlier age. Tight, sore muscles and restricted joint movements are frequently put down to ‘growing pains’ but are usually the result of prolonged poor posture which if uncorrected can persist into adult life and lead to future chronic issues. Whilst people are now more aware of the need to correct poor posture, they don’t usually know the best way to do this.
